Welcome to Sousa Lab
Nanomedicine & RNA therapeutics
The Sousa Lab is an independent research group dedicated to engineering next-generation RNA nanomedicines for cancer treatment, with a primary focus on immune modulation.
Led by Dr. Flávia Sousa, the lab develops biodegradable polymeric and lipid-based nanoparticles for the delivery of RNA therapeutics beyond mRNA, oligonucleotides, immunomodelators and non-viral gene delivery platforms. Our mission is to reprogram the tumor microenvironment through precision nanotechnology and to translate innovative formulation strategies into clinically relevant solutions.

Publications
Our research focuses on developing innovative nanomedicine strategies to improve treatment outcomes for glioblastoma. By leveraging membrane dynamics of tumor endothelial cells, I design targeted nanotherapeutics, including saRNA-loaded nanoparticles and nanovaccines, to enhance drug delivery and modulate the tumor microenvironment. Our work bridges nanotechnology, immunotherapy, and pharmacokinetics to advance precision medicine for brain cancer.
